FEDERAL ENERGY TAX CREDIT
STILL AVAILABLE THROUGH 2010
As part of the last year’s federal stimulus
package, the federal government is
extending the energy tax credit to the end
of 2010. This is a tax credit that comes off
your final tax bill, which is a better deal
than a simple deduction. You get credit for
up to $1500 when you install energy-
efficient windows, doors, insulation, roofs,
water heaters appliances and HVAC
equipment.
For those of you who had Snowridge install
new windows last year, the IRS Form 5695
is now available. For more information,
please visit www.energystar.gov.
SAVE EVEN MORE $$ WITH REBATES
For a limited time, Puget Sound Energy
offers up to $500 in rebates on new energy-
efficient windows in a fully-insulted home.
Check out their website (www.pse.org) for
more information, or see below.
From time to time, our suppliers offer
rebates. For instance, Milgard now offers a
rebate on their Tuscany vinyl windows
THROUGH JUNE 30, 2010. If we install 5-10
Tuscany vinyl windows in your home, you
get rebate of $20 per window. For 11-20
windows installed, you get a rebate of $25
per window. For 21 + windows installed,
you get a rebate of $30 per window.
Below is more information on how to buy
the right windows to qualify for the federal
tax credit and utility rebates.
WHICH WINDOWS ARE ELIGIBLE?Some
restrictions apply. The windows must meet
specific manufacturing standards for energy
efficiency (see back page for examples.) You
can learn more by visiting the Energy Star
website (www.energystar.gov). All the windows
Snowridge installs meet these requirements.
Additionally, you must have proof that your new
windows are Energy Star. Either save the labels
that come on the new window or get the
Manufacturers Certification Statement.
HOW MUCH CAN YOU SAVE?
You can claim a tax credit of 30% of the cost of
the new windows, up to $1500. This doesn’t
include the cost of installation - just the windows.
Snowridge will give our new clients an
information package that can help you file for
this tax credit.
Tax credits are also available for up to $1500
toward the cost of energy-efficient home
improvements such as:
Doors;
Insulation;
Roofs (metal and asphalt);
Energy-efficient furnace, air conditioner, heat
pump or boiler;
Non solar water heater.
So save money up front and for years to come.

Q&As ABOUT ENERGY-EFFICIENT WINDOWS
Do My New Windows Qualify for a Tax Credit?
To qualify, windows, doors, and skylights placed
in service after February 17, 2009 must have a
U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient
(SHGC) less than or equal to 0.30. You can find
the U-factor and SHGC on the National
Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label. The
NFRC is an independent, third-party
organization that administers the only uniform,
independent rating and labeling system for the
energy performance of windows, doors,
skylights, and attachment products.
So what is a U-Factor or SHGC, anyway?
U-Factor measures the heat transfer through a
window, door, or skylight and tells you how well
the product insulates. The lower the U-Factor,
the greater resistance to heat flow (in and out)
and the better its insulation value.
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) is the
fraction of solar radiation admitted through a
window, door, or skylight. This tells you how well
the product blocks heat caused by the sun. The
lower the SHGC, the less solar heat it transmits.
Again, Snowridge installs windows that qualify
for the 2009 tax credit. We can also help you
choose the right door and skylight.
What is a Manufacturer’s Certification
Statement?
This is a signed statement from the
manufacturer certifying that the product or
component qualifies for the tax credit. The IRS
encourages manufacturers to provide these
Certifications on their website. Taxpayers must
keep a copy of the certification statement for
their records, but do not have to submit a copy
with their tax return.
